Unnecessary, yes. Though I wouldn't call it silly.
[A beat.]
...Admittedly, I have wondered what it might be like to taste things. Food is such an important part of any given culture; it's strange to not be able to experience it, when I was designed with the purpose to integrate and learn from humans.
Well, to those of us who do eat, it looks like you’re tasting whatever it is you’re putting in your mouth, oil or blood or whatever else. Even if I know what it is you’re doing, I can’t help but make the association, and I also can’t help thinking “that must taste awful”.
All modes of scanning are disabled. This includes preconstruction and reconstruction, as well as simply analyzing people and items as necessary. I cannot interface with technology [Struxta was an exception, apparently] and I cannot communicate wirelessly with other androids. I've lost the ability to mimic voices. I've also lost my connection to a continually updating database; generally, I've lost connection to CyberLife altogether, though this isn't surprising, given the apparent distance.
[ And indeed it is. Arenvald has no idea what half of that stuff even means, but the sheer amount of things Connor rattled off is startling. ]
I know Aliphinaud and Alisaie both have lost the ability to use the magic they could use back in Eorzea, so I wonder if whatever law that governs that places a lot of your functions in the same category. I’m fairly certain my Echo is gone as well, but that is definitely more magical.
[ Had this come up months ago, Arenvald wouldn’t be so keen to talk about it. Not many people back home knew of or fully understood the Echo. Arenvald carries enough stigma with him already, no need to add to it. But now, there’s no harm in talking about it if it’s useless.
Even if it wasn’t, though, he still trusts Connor. Trusts him enough to want to discuss his past, and his abilities. Well, ability. Aside from the Echo, he has ever been unremarkable, after all. ]
The Echo is a… a gift, I suppose? I’m not sure I came by it, myself, but primarily it allows me glimpses into the past. It’s not something that can be used at will, though. Visions just sort of… happen.
[ He can guess what a memory probe is, just based on the name. It sounds a bit more… invasive than what the Echo can do. ]
People, usually. Most often they crop up in situation of stress or intense emotion, but it’s a very fickle sort of thing. I could go moons— er, months, rather, without a single vision, or I might get a handful in quick succession.
That's actually a very impressive skill to have, though to be truly useful you'd have to manage a way for it to not happen only randomly. Still, looking into someone's past without them realizing it can be advantageous to you.

[ Don’t lick strange things you find on the street, Connor!! ]
no subject
To be fair, taking oil samples isn't common.
It's usually various forms of blood, or other relevant bodily fluids.
no subject
That’s even worse. Gods, I wouldn’t want a sense of taste if I had to do all that!
no subject
Maybe so. But being able to take samples in real time has always proved advantageous during investigations. It's just part of the job.
no subject
[ This, as he jabs at Connor’s shoulder playfully. ]
But I’ll believe you when you say it’s helpful. We’ve nothing very sophisticated when it comes to investigating murders or aught else.
no subject
You sound like someone I know.
no subject
Do I now? I hope that’s a compliment.
[ Little does he know. ]
no subject
[I hope you can hear those air quotes, Arenvald.]
no subject
Surely you understand why we’d think that, right?
no subject
I don't taste, as you said. I don't get sick. There's no reason why you should think it's 'gross' when the usual consequences don't apply.

If it helps, the point is a moot one here.

[ He tilts his head a little. ]
Are there any other functions you’re missing aside from that?
no subject
[Definitely yes.]

[He realizes that he's never discussed the abilities of his friend before he joined the Circle. An oversight on his part, he now believes.]

Is it like a memory probe?
[Before belated realizing that Arenvald has no context regarding that.]
Or rather… you really don’t know what causes a vision to happen? Are they connected to people, or places?
no subject
People, usually. Most often they crop up in situation of stress or intense emotion, but it’s a very fickle sort of thing. I could go moons— er, months, rather, without a single vision, or I might get a handful in quick succession.

Connor nods, considering.]
Is the other person aware of when it happens?
no subject
[ Or if they know how to recognize the physical symptoms of a vision when it happens, but even among the Scions, that’s fairly rare. ]
no subject
[Another pause.]

[ A shrug. ]
The rest of the Echo’s abilities are passive, but unless we were to run across a Primal on another world, it doesn’t hold much bearing here.
no subject
[The questions just keep rolling along unless Arenvald stops them. ]
